New look for 2008
It's been a long time since I did anything with this site: over a year now. Hopefully I'll be more active this year. I decided to stop using Joomla as my CMS. It's an excellent piece of software but I wanted more control of the layout and structure of my site. Now most of the content is static, except for pages with comments. I'm using the Simple Comments script to drive those.
If you try to post a comment you'll notice I've introduced captchas, specifically recaptcha. I know it's annoying but unfortunately some people will make our lives miserable by spamming unless we do something to stop them. Recaptcha is cool because they actually make solving the puzzles worthwhile. They show you to distorted pieces of text. One of them is the test to prove that you are not a robot. The second is a scan of a word from a book that OCR could not translate. Once they have shown these words to enough people and got consistent results, they know what the word is. So even though the captchas are irritating, at least you're helping to translate old books into digital form.
