Introducing the µTorrent Web UI Firefox extension
Welcome to the new home of the µTorrent Web UI Firefox extension. The Web UI lets you control µTorrent when you are away from home, via a web page interface. I use it to start torrents when I am at the office. For a better description, installation instructions and help, visit the Web UI forum. This extension makes the Web UI a little easier to use in Firefox. These are the features...
- The current total upload and download rates are shown in the status bar.
- The µTorrent interface is shown in a Firefox sidebar window. To view it left click in the status bar, select the View > Sidebar > µTorrent menu or press Alt + U.
- Drag and drop .torrent file links over to either the µTorrent sidebar or status bar to start them.
- Hover the mouse cursor over the status bar to display progress on uploads and downloads in a tooltip box.
Many thanks to Avaly for contributing many of these features. Drag and drop is the most useful feature. Using the Web UI alone, starting a torrent can be inconvenient. You must download the torrent file to your hard disk, click Add Torrent, browse to the file, click OK, delete the file, etc. This plugin simplifies the process to a single mouse gesture. Just drag the link from the source web page into the sidebar area or status bar area. Using the status bar allows you to start torrents without opening the main µTorrent sidebar.
By the way, once you have dragged a torrent file you do not need to wait for it to appear in µTorrent before you drag another. They are queued up and will all appear eventually. If for some reason the torrent cannot be started an error dialog will appear explaining the problem.
Note that the torrent may take several seconds to appear if your Internet connection is under heavy use. In a future version, I will add a status bar progress meter to make this clearer. I would also like to add a toolbar button to display the sidebar and perhaps some additional information in the status bar about your torrents.
To install the µTorrent extension, go here. Then point it at your torrent box in the Options dialog (from the Tools > Extensions menu). You'll need your IP address and the port µTorrent uses for the Web UI. Assuming you are using the computer on which µTorrent is installed and you aren't using a proxy server, your IP address is...
Your port is configured in your µTorrent preferences in the Connection section.
